Group vs. Private Pickleball Lessons: Which is Right for Your Game?

Pickleball Lesson with Two Coaches Singapore

So, you’ve decided to pick up a paddle - now comes the big question: should you join a group class or book a private coach?

In the growing world of pickleball in Singapore, there is no "one size fits all" answer. The right choice depends on your goals, your schedule, and how you like to learn. At Straits Pickle Club, we offer both paths to ensure every student finds their rhythm.

Here is everything you need to know to choose the perfect lesson format for your journey.

Why Join Group Lessons?

Our group pickleball lessons are the heartbeat of our academy. They are designed for players who love the energy of a community and want to learn the game in a dynamic, "real-world" setting.

  • Structured 3-Tier Progression: We don’t believe in "one size fits all." We offer three distinct levels: Beginner, Novice, and Intermediate, ensuring you train with classmates at the same stage of development.

  • Game-Based Learning: While our group lessons has some focus on technique correction, the real magic happens when we integrate those skills into matchplay. You’ll experience real-life game situations, learning how to strategize against different playing styles.

  • The Power of Community: Many of our students start as strangers and end up as regular play partners. It’s a fantastic way to build your "pickleball tribe" in Singapore.

  • More Time on Court: Unlike a standard 60-minute private lesson, our group lessons run for 1.5 hours, giving you the extra time needed for both drills and full-speed gameplay.

  • Premium Ratios: We maintain a strict maximum of 4 people per court (12 students over 3 courts). If more than 6 students are present, we deploy 2 professional coaches to ensure everyone receives high-quality feedback.

Why Choose Private Lessons?

If you are looking for rapid, pinpoint technical improvement, private pickleball coaching is a game-changer. These sessions are entirely bespoke, tailored to your specific strengths and weaknesses.

  • Bespoke Attention: Whether you are 1-on-1 or in a small private group of up to 4, the coach’s eye is solely on you. This allows for microscopic refinements in your stroke, footwork, and paddle angles that aren't always possible in a larger group.

  • Rapid Technical Growth: Private lessons are the most efficient way to break "bad habits." If you’re struggling with a specific shot, like the third-shot drop or your backhand flick - a private hour allows for the high-repetition drilling needed to master it.

  • Flexible Scheduling: Can't make our weekly group slots? Private lessons are scheduled around you, making them the ideal choice for busy professionals.

Who are Private Lessons for? While we often recommend group classes for 3–4 adults (because matchplay is so vital), private sessions are the perfect solution for:

  • Junior Players: Our group lessons are for ages 16 and above; private lessons are the best way for children to learn.

  • Families & Couples: Families with varying skill levels who want to learn together in a private environment.

  • Specific Goal-Seekers: Players preparing for a specific tournament or those returning from an injury.

  • Elite Competitors: For high-level players whose skills have surpassed our Intermediate group tier, private coaching provides the specialised training required to compete at the top of the DUPR rankings.

The Verdict: Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose Group Lessons if: You want a more social experience, a longer 1.5h session, and a balance between technique correction and testing your skills in real-game matchplay.

  • Choose Private Lessons if: You want the fastest technical improvement, need a specific time slot, or are looking for a session for your children or family.

At the end of the day, many of our most successful players do a hybrid: they use group lessons for the community and matchplay, and book an occasional private session to "tune up" specific parts of their technique.
